Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain

A supply chain includes a whole range of instances and processes from procurement to production and sales to consumers, which are interconnected across different levels in terms of information flow, financial flow and flow of goods.

In this context Supply Chain Design and Supply Chain Management play an important role for rendering the communication as transparent and the use of all resources at hand as efficient as possible.

This represents a particular challenge in practice as the instances involved in most supply chains generally relate to each other in a business relationship between supplier and buyer at the different respective levels. That is why the disclosure of information should be kept as minimal as necessary while the efficiency of all logistics processes and cost reduction should be maximised as well as possible.

Supply Chain Design

The supply chain design is primarily based on a company's objectives, its existing resources and on the structure of goods and products.

The corporate objectives define which products and which quality are to be offered in which markets and by use of which distribution and sales concepts. On the basis of this specification a supply chain can be designed considering the corresponding logistics systems and the personnel involved at the different sites. In addition a consistent exchange of information can now be achieved.

Supply Chain Management

The functions of supply chain management include the design, planning and control of goods and information flows along the entire supply chain. The more levels a supply chain features and the more instances are involved at one level, the greater the complexity of supply chain management becomes.

The processes of supply chain management (SCM) have to meet various requirements today:

  • Highly dynamic customer needs
  • Complicated demand forecasts due to greater market volatility
  • Exacting requirements relating to error-free workflows through "lean" production systems
  • Greater complexity due to a growing diversity of products and shorter product life cycles
  • Increasing intensity of global competition and advancement of global networking
  • A necessity of quick reactions to external influences from natural disasters to political crises
